Rick Pitino's Rise with St. John’s: A Season to Watch

Laugh at Indiana fans and their dream if you want to, but Brad Stevens is again on top of the hot board. After Stevens turned IU’s offer down in 2021 and publicly said he was “a Masshole now,” Indiana settled on former player Mike Woodson, and it went just about how many expected. The timing could be better for IU and for Stevens this time around. The Boston Celtics won an NBA title with the roster Stevens constructed. The franchise is being sold and will be under new ownership, something that could leave the fate of the front office up in the air. In addition, Stevens’s son is a freshman walk-on at Notre Dame and could transfer to IU to play for his father. The basketball savant has been the white whale for IU basketball fans since leading the Butler Bulldogs to consecutive national title game appearances. IU’s NIL might be further turbocharged with Stevens at the helm. It’s still unlikely, but the Hoosiers will do whatever they can to make the dream a reality.

Brad Stevens - Boston Celtics

Dusty May is an Indiana native who was a manager for the Hoosiers. He took the Florida Atlantic Owls to the Final Four and has quickly flipped Michigan from last place in the Big Ten to a 17-5 record with four losses by three points or fewer. May has won 65.9 percent of his games in seven seasons as a head coach and is still only 48 years old. If he were still at FAU, this would likely be a no-brainer, but this is his first season in Ann Arbor, and he could have qualms about jumping from one Big Ten school to another.

A seemingly innocuous series of misdeeds by Kelvin Sampson set many Indiana fans and administrators on edge. They caused the school to rip apart the basketball program with self-imposed penalties. Since then, the Hoosiers have been reticent to consider coaches with checkered pasts. While undoubtedly a fantastic coach, Chris Beard would be a sharp departure from that mindset. Beard was fired from Texas after a domestic violence arrest. Although the charges were dropped, that stain could remove him from consideration. Two things are certain: Beard can win and has a reverence for the IU basketball job, as well as his former mentor, Bob Knight. If IU was comfortable with him and offered the position, Beard would run to Bloomington.

Indiana could go a very different route with this hire. Athletic director Scott Dolson identified and hired Curt Cignetti as a serial winner who could fix the IU football program. His first season was a historic grand slam, and it would be understandable if Dolson tried to follow the same formula with this hire. Drake’s Ben McCollum won 81.3 percent of his games in 15 seasons at Division II Northwest Missouri State and turned a doormat into a power with four national titles. In his first season at Drake, the Bulldogs are 21-2, and McCollum is considered a rising star at 43 years old. His teams play a slow pace and quite methodical but if you Google him, it is easy to see why McCollum could be attractive.

Scott Drew is an Indiana native who graduated from Butler and coached at Valparaiso, but he has been at Baylor for a long time and might not want to start over at 54 years old. He won a national title with the Bears and has five Sweet Sixteen appearances, and he might feel he has plateaued in Waco. Drew is an outspoken Christian and has said publicly that he enjoys the freedom a private school offers to express those beliefs. That would not necessarily be frowned upon in Bloomington, but it would be a different environment for him to adjust to. Drew turned down Louisville last cycle after nearly taking their offer. Would he say yes to a similar offer from a Big Ten school?
