Prediction: Northwestern Over Minnesota
Northwestern and Minnesota played only once this year, on February 25th, and the Wildcats dismantled the Gophers in Minneapolis 75-63. The Wildcats’ season went in the tank after star <a href="https://www.sportsgrid.com/cbb/players/brooks-barnhizer/7643">Brooks Barnhizer </a>was lost for the season in late January. Northwestern still has <a href="https://www.sportsgrid.com/cbb/players/nick-martinelli/7647">Nick Martinelli</a> leading the way, and that should be enough to get past the Gophers. Minnesota has lost four of the last five games, but <a href="https://www.sportsgrid.com/cbb/players/dawson-garcia/15788">Dawson Garcia</a> can take over a game and get a surprise win in the first round.

Ohio State and Iowa met once this season in late January. The Buckeyes controlled the game and rolled to an 82-65 win over the Hawkeyes. Both teams are coming into this tournament losers of four of their last six games. Ohio State has more talent, but the Hawkeyes can hit threes with the best of them.

Rutgers knocked off USC just a couple weeks ago 95-85. USC is another underperforming team, and the Trojans just didn’t have the horses to keep up in the Big Ten.

Wisconsin won the only matchup against Northwestern this season 75-69, but that was a more complete Wildcat team.

The Illini are led by guard <a href="https://www.sportsgrid.com/cbb/players/kasparas-jakucionis/69020">Kasparas Jakucionis</a>, who will match up with Ohio State guard <a href="https://www.sportsgrid.com/cbb/players/bruce-thornton/10248">Bruce Thornton</a>. The Illini are built for March and are starting to get hot. Illinois won the only matchup this season with the Buckeyes back at the beginning of February.

If Smith is playing well, Purdue can beat anyone in the conference. If he’s turning the ball over, they can lose to anyone. The Boilermakers will also have local support in Indy.

In their only matchup this season, the Hoosiers knocked off Michigan State in East Lansing. While IU is hot right now, this is March, and Tom Izzo still coaches Michigan State. The Spartans went ice cold from long range in that game and will need more from starters <a href="https://www.sportsgrid.com/cbb/players/szymon-zapala/8516">Szymon Zapala</a> and <a href="https://www.sportsgrid.com/cbb/players/jeremy-fears/11691">Jeremy Fears Jr.</a>, who combined for two points in the loss. IU will have to contain <a href="https://www.sportsgrid.com/cbb/players/jase-richardson/78764">Jase Richardson </a>and <a href="https://www.sportsgrid.com/cbb/players/jaden-akins/11695">Jaden Akins</a>, who combined for 27 points in that game.

This game can go either way. UCLA beat Wisconsin 85-83 back in January at home. The Bruins are just 2-5 when traveling east to play conference games. Led by forward <a href="https://www.sportsgrid.com/cbb/players/tyler-bilodeau/8038">Tyler Bilodeau</a>’s 14 points a game, the Bruin offense can be hard to stop. Wisconsin will be UCLA’s toughest opponent since losing at Purdue in February.

The Maryland Terrapins have been on a tear for most of the season. Their seven losses all year have come by no more than seven points. Illinois will be coming off a physical game with Ohio State, while Maryland will have fresh legs. Maryland also crushed the Illini on the road 91-70 earlier this year.

Prediction: Michigan State over Maryland
Michigan State and Maryland get a rematch of what was probably the game of the year in the Big Ten. The Spartans knocked off the Terrapins in College Park on a half-court buzzer beater 58-55. In that one, the Spartan defense slowed down the Terrapin offense and will look to do so again with the conference title on the line. These are the two best teams in the Big Ten, and they should provide more fireworks.
